Now that this is an election year, the incumbent parties are once again giving lip service to campaign finance reform. Don't be fooled - we must not forget that both the Democratic and Republican parties were litigants to overturn prop. 208, the campaign finance reform initiative. The Reform Party, on the other hand, supported prop. 208. I worked alongside other Reform Party members (and a coalition which included The League of Women Voters, AARP, and UWSA) to get prop. 208 on the ballot and passed. We achieved a stunning victory -- the Campaign Finance Reform initiative passed with an overwhelming 61% majority in 1996. In 1996, I also ran for Congress on the Reform Party ticket and experienced first hand how the political system favors incumbents.
